Bowland House – A home from home
Staying close to a loved one in hospital can make all the difference. For many families, being nearby offers comfort, reassurance, and the chance to be there when they are needed most.
At Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, our on-site hotel, Bowland House, provides just that. Last year alone, Bowland House gave families 3,558 overnight stays, helping hundreds of people remain close to loved ones receiving care at our hospitals.
It costs around £30 a night to keep a room at Bowland House available – and this is only possible thanks to donations.
Many families who have stayed at Bowland House choose to give back afterwards, helping to make sure the same support is there for others in the future. You might even like to “sponsor a room” so another family can stay close when it matters most.

Read Terry’ story – Supporting Bowland House After Life-Saving Care
When Terry McIntryre, a dad-of-two, was rushed to the Royal Preston Hospital in August 2025 with a Myasthenia Gravis crisis triggered by Legionella pneumonia, he and his family faced a frightening and uncertain time. Terry spent 14 days in the Critical Care Unit followed by six nights on the Bleasdale Neurology Ward, where the expert clinical care, and extraordinary compassion, of staff saved his life.
During this period, his daughters Grainne and Rosie stayed at Bowland House, the hospital’s on-site guest house, which provides free accommodation to families so they can remain close to their loved ones. “Being able to stay in Bowland House made things so much easier for my daughters while I was in hospital,” Terry recalls.
In gratitude for the care he received and the support his family experienced, Terry has made a generous contribution to our hospital chairy:
- £1,250 for staff welfare projects
- £3,750 for new furniture for Bowland House
Grainne has also set up a monthly standing order to continue supporting improvements to the facility, ensuring future families have a comfortable stay.
Since opening in 2011, Bowland House has provided thousands of overnight stays to families, with LTHC regularly investing in upgrades such as new TVs, bedding, fridges, and door locks.
Donations like Terry’s help maintain and enhance this vital facility, allowing families to focus on what matters most – their loved ones.
